Hypermiling Techniques

What is hypermiling?

Hypermiling is a system of driving tecnhiques, tweaks, and actions which make it possible to get maximum mileage out of each gallon of gasoline that you use and to lower your gasoline consumption.

This can include modifications you can make to your car, as well as driving techniques and common-sense guidelines on the how you care for and handle your vehicle, and other factors including lifestyle changes which will reduce your fuel consumption.

The term "hypermiling" is believed to have been coined by a man from Illinois named Wayne Gerdes. And the word "hypermiling" first appeared on the Internet a few years ago when gasoline prices started to escalate dramatically.

The following are a few points which are covered by hypermiling techniques

1. Keeping track of your gas mileage

2. How to avoid extra weight in your car

3. Proper positioning of bicycle racks and similar items

4. Avoiding driving at certain times of day and avoiding certain types of traffic

5. How you start your car

6. How and where to park your car

7. How to run the air conditioning in your car, and what to do on hot days

8. How fast you should drive

9. Which part of the highway you should drive on

10. Weather conditions to avoid while driving

11. How to brake and accelerate your car

12. Vehicle maintenence for maximum mileage.

There are also safety issues to take into consideration when hypermiling. There has been some controversy on the subject of hypermiling because some people use extreme techniques which are unsafe and/or illegal. So it is important to know some of the unsafe "hypermiling" techniques to avoid.

These unsafe (and illegal) techniques include:

1. Tailgating large trucks

2. Coasting in unsafe ways

3. Racing traffic lights

4. And (extremely dangerous) speeding around turns

An important factor to take into consideration is that safety is never cast aside in favor of saving a few pennies or even a few dollars on gasoline. I think we can all agree that a totaled car or the death of a loved-one (or a stranger) will not be compensated by the money saved on fuel. No matter how many dollars a gallon of gas costs.

There is more to hypermiling and gas-saving then just the driving techniques and auto tune-ups. There are also lifestyle changes, alternative fuels, and even the use of hybrid vehicles. There is talk of electrical or water-powered cars and in fact some have already found and claimed to be successful with running their cars on water.

There is more to be saved than just your wallet when we speak about conserving on fuel. There is also the environment, with issues of heavy pollution and exponentially increasing speeds of Global Warming which could dwarf any current economic issues we have in comparision.

Learning the full and complete techniques of hypermiling safely can benefit just about anyone in our current fuel-driven society.

It can help reduce the threat to your wallet, and the threat to the environment as well.
